Maternally Yours

A maternal state of mind can make the world bearable. I have come out alive from large and small group meetings due to this belief. Here’s the logic. If each human being was someone’s child, it is difficult to hate them completely, it is difficult to judge them harshly, and for a moment imperfection becomes alright. For this reason, it is not uncommon, in long-term couples to occasionally switch in to a more parental role when stress and circumstance overwhelms the other. Because a maternal state of mind informs us, carefully and with compassion, that not knowing what will be happen in the next hour is completely normal. It also informs us of the importance of understanding others before seeking to be understood. It delightfully opens our ears to new words. In the end, when a story is read at night which helps make sense of it all, followed by a good sound sleep, it is all that matters.
