How 'Dead' I Do?

Today I’ll consider writing a story. A story of someone who became absolutely powerful. I have never seen a situation in which a person gets power, finally and forever, and then it ends in a holiday of ultimate satisfaction. I want to get at the root cause behind the endless need for power, deception, negotiation, and other -ions that make us feel as if power will avert the end of life.

Once upon a time there was a man. He received an anonymous letter one day which said the following, “You do not need to prove anything to anyone anymore. You are all powerful now. You are also going to live forever and you can be with any woman or man of your choice. You can eat whatever you like and live where ever you want to live. You will always be liked and praised. No one will ever get angry at you or hate you for any reason. You will live forever.” After reading the last sentence, the man became worried, then sad, and within two weeks began to feel depressed. He lost all meaning and died of boredom.

Why is power so sought after? Perhaps at some basic level it is an indicator of increasing chances of life. Somewhere people think if they are powerful, they are less likely to die when bad things will befall all human beings. The powerful will stay ahead when death is chasing. What still remains unanswered for me is if everyone dies anyways, how does exerting power help? It probably ensured reproductive success at some point in our ancestral history. You may not live, but if you are powerful, you may have a hundred children. With the chiseling of civilization, this became a hundred ideas, a hundred organizations, a hundred inventions, and so forth. My own conclusion, so far in life, is as follows:

When power is experienced, it doesn’t mean you will live forever. It simply feels like you will live forever. Ultimately how we feel in the moment of death is what informs us how we did.
